Voice technology still doesn't understand how Nigerians really talk. Record yourself reading short lines and answering everyday questions in Pidgin, Nigerian English, Yorùbá, Igbo or Hausa, and get paid for every session we approve.
What you need
- A quiet-ish place. Real life is fine: a room, a shop, a bus stop. Just not a loud party.
- Your own phone with a working microphone, and a little data.
- A bank account in your name, so we can pay you.
How old are you?
The program is for adults only. We use your date of birth to check that, and to balance voices by age.
This one is for adults.
The Oya voice program is open to people aged 18 and over. We haven't kept your date of birth or anything else from this sign-up. We'd love to hear from you when you're 18.
Terms and consent
Here's the short version. Please read the full terms too; they're what you're agreeing to.
You withdrew your consent. Your recordings are no longer used for new work. To record again, read and accept the current terms.
What you'll do
Record short lines and answer everyday questions in your own voice, on your own phone, one session at a time.
What we keep
- Your recordings and what you said in them.
- Your profile: languages, gender, region, phone type and date of birth.
- Your bank details, only to pay you.
How we use your voice
Only for the uses you choose below. We never sell your recordings. Recordings are stored on Google Cloud in London, and we send them to the speech-recognition service we use (Spitch) to check and transcribe them.
Payment
₦500 for each session we approve. We may reject recordings that are unclear, incomplete or not your own voice. One account per person, paid to a bank account in your name.
Your choices
You can withdraw at any time in Settings. We then stop using your recordings for anything new. Models already trained can't unlearn them, but we won't use your recordings again. Write to hello@heyoya.io to see or delete your data.
Please never
Record anyone else without their consent, or say personal details (your full name, address, phone or account numbers) in a recording.

This helps us make sure Oya works for every kind of voice, and lets us pay you.

Pick a language and record a session. It takes about 30 minutes, and you can stop and come back.

Oya needs your microphone.
Your browser will ask to use it. We only record after you tap Record, and each take is sent to us as part of your session.
- Hold the phone a hand's width from your mouth, not right against it.
- Talk the way you normally do, not like reading the news. Stumbles are fine; record again if you like.
- Read numbers the way you'd say them. Never say your real name, address or account numbers.

You've recorded every line. We'll listen and approve the session, usually within a few days. Then ₦500 is added to what we owe you.
